Journalist Paul Brown has made a bold claim concerning Everton and their January transfer business. Following the departure of James Rodriguez, Brown claims that Everton could sign a player to fill his void in January.

Despite his history with the club, Rafa Benitez is quietly doing a good job at Merseyside. The Spanish coach has led the team credibly this season, with the team sitting 7th on the log with just a loss from seven games.

Over the weekend, Everton secured a vital point at Old Trafford, despite a depleted squad. Some of the players missing include Richarlison, Alex Iwobi and Dominic Calvert Lewin. The absence of key players has not stopped Benitez from moulding a team to finish in the top four. Speaking recently, the experienced manager revealed why the club were eager to sell the South American star.

With Rodriguez gone and Alex Iwobi expected to be out in January for the Africa Cup of Nations, Benitez will hope to reinforce his squad to keep the challenge going.

James departs Merseyside after inglorious tenure

Ancelotti arrived at Everton in 2019, hoping to turn the side into trophy contenders in England. One of the players he signed was James Rodriguez, with whom he had a history at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

The Italian manager had hoped he could bring out the best in the Colombian. It turned out to be a bad experiment with James not finding the form that endeared him to the world.

James Rodriguez moved to Everton in 2020 after struggling to find his feet at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Much was expected of the Colombian at Goodison Park, but the best he could do came in his first season, where he notched up six goals and nine assists in all competitions.

It has since been downhill for the former Real Madrid player as he missed 22 games through injury. The Toffees tried to sell him during the summer but failed to do so due to the player's wages.

The Colombian star brought his tumultuous stay at Merseyside to an end last week, after Qatari side Al Rayyan agreed to sign him.

Everton need reinforcements

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Brown said January had answers to whether Everton will sign a player or not. According to him, they are more likely to sign a player in January. He said there was a lot of noise coming from Goodison, and if they were true, then James Rodriguez being off their books opens an opportunity for Everton to make a signing.

In the summer, Everton spent £1.8 million to bring in new players. Everton signed players with Premier League experience for decent fees.

The team, however, remains short of top quality players, and a notable feature is a lack of depth.

For the materials available to him, Rafa Benitez has so far done a great job. When the January window opens, we'll be sure to keep you updated with all the latest transfer news and developments surrounding Everton.
