Arsenal steps up bid for James Maddison

Arsenal is stepping up its efforts to bring Leicester City midfielder James Maddison to the Emirates this summer.

The Gunners have identified Maddison as a key target this summer and would offer a player-plus-cash deal to bring the Foxes’ midfielder to North London this summer. Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta craves creativity in his midfield and believes Maddison is the right candidate for the job after the departure of Martin Odegaard. Odegaard returned to Real Madrid at the end of his loan spell.

Leicester City had rejected a £70m offer for Maddison from another Premier League side last summer. The club now believes a fee in excess of £50million will not tempt them to sell their player.

However, the Gunners are willing to add other fringe players such as Reiss Nelson or Ainsley Maitland-Niles to the deal. Arsenal is set for a complicated and protracted negotiation with the Foxes but believes that the KingPower Occupants will be willing to come to the negotiation table.

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers is desperate to add wide-forward players to his squad. The former Liverpool boss could be tempted by the prospect of Ainsley Maitland-Niles joining his team. The Foxes had already made inquiries about the forward last January.

James Maddison: a vital part of Rogers' plan

James Maddison has been central to Rogers' plan ever since the Foxes’ boss arrived in 2019. The English international has been instrumental to Leicester City’s ambitions in recent years. He has proved himself capable of being the support needed by Jamie Vardy.

He was part of the Leicester team that lifted the FA Cup trophy last season. Maddison was plagued with injury last season, and as a result, he had to start from the bench in the FA Cup final win against Chelsea. Maddison had suffered a rib injury last season.

Renato Sanchez, on the other hand, is now a hotly contested commodity, with the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool’s interest, the Portuguese international found himself under the spotlight. Arsenal joined the list recently, and is reportedly eyeing the Lille midfielder if they fail in their pursuit of Maddison.
