World Cup 2026 Group Stage: New Format
The group stage of the 2026 World Cup will start on June 11. The opening match will be between Mexico and South Africa in Mexico City. The final matches will be played on June 27. For bettors following World Cup betting, this stage offers the highest match volume and the widest range of markets.
With the new format, there will be 48 teams in 12 groups, for a total of 72 matches. Each team in the groups will play three games, once against every opponent. The points per game are the following:
- 3 points for a win
- 1 point for a draw
- 0 points for a loss
To progress in the elimination phase, a nation must finish in the first or second spot. Third-ranked teams can also qualify, but their ascension is a bit different. Once the group stage ends, a separate table will be created for the third-ranked teams. The top 8 out of the 12 will proceed to the Round of 32.
This is a bit different compared to the other format. The previous format, which was enforced from the 1998 World Cup to the 2022 World Cup, had 8 groups of 4 teams. Only the first and second-placed teams proceeded to the next round. This meant that there was no Round of 32. Instead, teams went head-to-head in the Round of 16.
What Are the Options for Betting on the World Cup 2026 Group Stage?
Match betting drives most of the action during the group phase. This is a match-per-match betting system. There are three main options:
- Home team to win
- Away team to win
- Draw
You can bet on any match in the group stage. Considering the fact that there will be 72 matches in the group stage, every bettor will have plenty of options to choose from.
Betpack Expert’s Tip: Angle on WC26 Group Stage Betting
The second match is when I would start my match winner bets, and the third match is when I would go back to betting on totals. If France wins 2 out of the three games and secures a definite spot in the Round of 32, they might save their players against Norway and play with substitutes. This makes the game far more unpredictable.
Choose a Trusted Sports Betting Site
Step
1
Choose a Trusted Sports Betting Site
Start with a bookmaker that covers international football well. You want strong pricing on group markets, quick updates, and a clean interface. During the group stage, you’ll likely place multiple bets across different days, so usability matters just as much as odds.
Step
2
Check The Recent Team Form
Get familiar with the results of your chosen squads. Take a look at their recent history and form. You’ll learn details regarding the number of goals for and against, player performance, etc. This information can shape the way a team plays.
Step
3
Pick the Right Betting Market
Don’t jump between markets without a plan. Choose whether you want to play short or long-term. If you’re into short-term bets, it’s wise to wager on the match winner. Long-term betting is more suitable for choosing group winners or teams to qualify.
Step
4
Check The Odds Before You Bet
Certain games may have high odds for an outcome that is more likely to occur. Check them before you rush into placing a bet because these types of bets can make a huge difference to the potential payout.
Step
5
Manage Your Bankroll Strategically
Make sure that you create a budget and stick to it. Use bonuses with user-friendly terms and don’t go over your budget. If needed, set a loss limit and remember – the idea is to bet for fun. There’s no need to take unnecessary risks.
World Cup 2026 Groups
Some have criticised the new format by saying that it adds a lot of unnecessary games and gives participation to teams who don’t quite “deserve” to play in the World Cup. Others have supported the idea because it brings forth more matches and more betting opportunities. Here’s a quick outline of every group.
WC 2026 – Group A
Mexico has a strong chance to set the tone on home soil. As the biggest favourite to qualify from Group A, they will carry heavy expectations, especially with the added boost of playing in front of their own fans. South Africa enters as the biggest outsider and will need a major upset to progress. Santiago Gimenez is the player to watch after a difficult, injury-hit season with Milan, making this tournament a perfect chance to respond for Mexico.

Top World Cup 2026 Group Stage Matches to Watch
Some group stage games carry more weight than others. Opening matches set the tone. Rivalries bring tension. Certain fixtures decide qualification before the final round even starts. If you’re active in World Cup group stage betting, these are the matches to track closely.- Mexico vs South Africa (Opening Match) – The tournament kicks off with the host nation under pressure. Mexico starts as the favourite, but opening games rarely play out cleanly. Nerves slow things down. That makes draw markets and first goal timing more interesting than straight win bets.
- Netherlands vs Japan (Tactical Matchup) – Japan proved they can disrupt top teams, and this sets up as a controlled game. The Netherlands will dominate possession, while Japan waits for transitions. Expect tight margins. Corners and under goals markets often carry more value here.
- Brazil vs Morocco (Defensive Test) – This will be the first game where Brazil will have to show what it’s made of without Neymar. Vini Jr. is poised to be one of the key players in the squad, and Morocco's defence will definitely have its hands full.
- USA vs Australia (Physical Contest) – This is the host’s chance to shine. The USA can really steal the spotlight with a good win, and if there's anything about Americans, they'll never miss a chance to put up a show. Australia is known to overperform, though. That's why this game will be a treat.
- Mexico vs South Korea (High-Tempo Game) – Nobody should miss a chance to watch the opening game of a World Cup. The first match has given us so many fond memories. One of those is South Africa’s opening match in 2010. Mexico and South Korea can definitely bring the heat and create an equally memorable moment.
- France vs Norway (Attacking Focus) – This matchup leans toward goals, with Mbappé on one side and Haaland on the other. Both of these players are strong contenders for the Top Scorer award. They're also considered the best attackers of the new generation, and this is one of the rare opportunities where we'll get to see them H2H.
- England vs Croatia (Group L Decider) – Likely the key game in Group L. England controls the ball, Croatia controls the tempo. As always, England is looking to "bring it home," while Croatia is there to make sure that they secure back-to-back-to-back World Cup medals.
- Switzerland vs Bosnia & Herzegovina (Qualification Battle) – This one could decide who moves on. Both sides know each other well. Bosnia is currently on a high as this is the nation's second-ever qualification for the World Cup, and they'll do everything to stay in it.

World Cup 2026 Group Stage Predictions & Betting Insights
Group A is where the main focus will be at the start of the tournament. Mexico and South Korea will play the opener. The pressure will be on Mexico to perform as a host nation. All teams bring forth decent qualities. Mexico and South Korea are much higher on the FIFA rankings, which is why they’re most likely to qualify. However, Czechia and South Africa shouldn’t be underestimated. Betting on goals is the safest option for this group.
Group L shouldn't be underestimated. Panama and Ghana can make things sturdy. Both England and Croatia are the biggest favourites, but the games against the other two teams are what will make the biggest difference. The safest option here is to bet on a draw between England and Croatia, and wins against Panama and Ghana. Only bet on a winner between England and Croatia if this is a decisive match on who's going to finish atop.
In Group I, France leads, but the fight to qualify between Senegal and Norway could swing on one result. Norway brings goals, but Senegal brings physical control. That’s where underdog odds start to offer value, especially after the first round.
Group F is where there will be no easy points. The Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia are eager to showcase themselves. Japan already showed they can beat elite sides. Sweden rarely loses cleanly. There won't be any easy games, and that makes pre-game betting very hard. Live bets based on current events are a much better option for games in this group.
Betpack Expert’s Tip: Where the Real Value Sits
Never bet on a match winner when you have extra hard games such as England vs Croatia or the USA vs Turkiye. These teams are considered favourites in their respective groups and won’t risk losing a game unless they’re in danger of finishing 3rd or 4th. Final squad announcements matter just as much. One key injury or the loss of their best player can change how a team plays, especially in midfield or defence. These shifts don’t always get priced in straight away.
Betting Odds for World Cup 2026 Group Stage Winners
Group winner markets sit between outright and match betting. You rely on three results, and small factors like goal difference or rotation often decide who finishes top.

World Cup 2026 Group Stage Schedule, Fixtures & Odds
The group stage will have games played almost daily from June 11 to June 27, 2026. There will be 72 matches total, and the fact that third-ranked teams can qualify makes things all the more unpredictable. This WC might be the first one in which finishing at the top of the table won’t mean much. It’ll be all about staying in the game with minimum effort.
Those who wish to place bets in the group stage will have to keep their eyes open on the latest results and team news. Things can change quickly here, and if there's anything that the 2025/26 season in football taught us, it's that the most unpredictable results are not that far from being real.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Many Teams Qualify from Each WC Group in 2026?
A total of 32 teams will go into the elimination phase from the group stage. The top two-ranked squads from each group get an automatic spot, whereas teams that are ranked third will be put in a separate table, and the top 8 will progress to the elimination phase.
Which Teams Are The Group Favourites?
Big teams such as Brazil, France, and Argentina are the biggest favourites to win in their respective groups. In some groups, the gap is clear. In others, especially balanced ones, the market stays tight and harder to predict.
How Does the New 48-Team Format Affect Group Stage Betting?
More teams mean more variance. Strong sides don’t need perfect records to qualify, and weaker teams stay in contention longer. That changes how odds behave, especially in group winner and qualification markets.
